and now a word from our sponsor...

commercials. for every funny one there are 3 really insulting ones and two simply disturbing ones. the corndog slapping a guy's face, talking bleach bottles, mops falling in love, dirt balls waiting for a dust wand, flo, people eating junk food and acting like it's the best choice we could make. dancing fruit, creepy kings and talking heads. over the years there have been SO many 30 second spots that inspired and disapponted.

remember the 60 second spots? then there was a phase where they would play back-to-back on one product, fill a 60 second spot with two 30 second ads. i LOVE watching the old ones, ones that took the nation's temperature with the latest products. great theme songs that we've been singing for years - teaching the world to sing or sounding off components of a burger. how much time have we spent watching ads? now we don't even see them, pass right by them with the push of a button. every time i wonder how any money is made when that happens. sponsors? is anyone sponsoring them now? if you're lost, follow the burma shave signs.

In order for me to watch ads, I have to watch TV first. I lost my interest in TV long ago, but I did watch when I grew up and remember some of the classic commercials. Some of them were annoying to watch at the time, but there are a few that I'd give almost anything to watch again--if only for the sake of nostalgia.

We have new forms of media these days, so any money lost on people zapping past the ads on TV will not be able to escape them as easily when they appear on websites and even e-mail. Fear not; no advertiser is going to go broke.

I remember Madge, it is an era now long gone. I imagine for the youth of today, today is the norm, and our nostalgic ideals are silly and mundane. Attached to those days however is our youth, our formative years, the years we learned to love,to hurt, and years that opened windows to great and wonderful things. Now we are here . . . in the great and wonderful. All things are relative I guess. I imagine the best we can do is enjoy every moment we have, know our blessings, love our family and friends, and never go into tomorrow wanting for what we think we left in the past. For the grass is as green as we keep it. I love your writing Terri, you really inspire, you're gifted.
